Track and Field Policies and General Information
Track
and Field is viewed by many to be an “individual sport.” But our feelings as Coon Rapids coaches are
that our “track team” is truly a team.
Our goal is to work together, to work hard, compete hard and represent
our school and community with a successful program.
All
events are important. An athlete scores
as many points for a first place in a sprint as they would first place in a
relay or jump or throw or distance race.
Events train differently but on “meet day” everyone has to do their part
to make the team successful. When an
athlete is not competing, she should cheer and support her teammates that are.
We
believe that these guidelines are an important part in developing and
maintaining a strong Coon Rapids Girls Track and Field program:
1. Attendance
at practice:
An
athlete is expected to be at practice everyday.
It is your number one priority after family and school. A good athlete finds reasons to be at
practice, not avoid it. The only way an
athlete is not allowed to compete for this program is if she has THREE
unexcused absences.
If
an athlete has an unexcused absence from practice, they are NOT allowed to
participate in the next meet: 1st unexcused – miss next meet; 2nd
unexcused – miss next two meets; 3rd unexcused – miss rest of meets,
but can still run workouts and be a manager after they discuss it with the
coaches.
If
an athlete is absent, a note signed by a parent, teacher, or doctor is needed
in order for it to be an excused absence and must be given to Coach Green. A note in our PO Box or a message sent with a
friend is unacceptable!
2.
Attendance at school:
The
main job of a high school student is to get an education and graduate. Our policy is this: an athlete must be in all
five classes in order to participate in practice or a meet that day. Also, there is no such thing as “Senior Skip
Day.” If you miss the Monday after Prom,
for ANY reason, you will miss the next meet!
3.
Attendance at a meet:
We
are a team! Your athlete is a member of
the team whether her event is first or last.
She is expected to be supportive throughout the meet. No
one will be allowed to leave a meet early without a note that will need to be
given to Coach Green prior to the meet.
Notes given to Coach Green at the meet will not be acceptable.
Also,
at a meet your priorities are your Coon
Rapids teammates.
After your event, support teammates in other events, help with warm-ups,
cool-downs, and stretching. Be a good
teammate. You can go say “Hi” to your
parents and others quickly after your event is over but then get back to being
a good teammate. Please do not bring
anyone onto the track or into our camp that is not part of our team.
For
“away meets” you are required by CRHS policy to ride the bus there and back
(liability issues). We also prefer that
athletes ride on the bus for team bonding purposes. If absolutely necessary, an athlete can
leave, only with a parent after the completion of the meet and have given Coach
Green a note the day before the meet.
4.
The Month of May – Championship
Month:
May
is known as Championship Month in track and field. This month contains the section and state
True Team Championships, the Conference Championship, and Section 5AA
State qualifying
meet. To do her best, an athlete needs
to practice, rest and study. We ask for
that one month to focus more on track.
Tell your summer coaches you need one month off to concentrate on
track. (We don’t ask you to compete in
track or fundraise in our off season. We
ask for consideration from your other coaches for one month. THAT’S FAIR!)
5.
Other Things to Know:
a. Nutrition is
important. Track season would be a good
time to give up junk food! If there is
one major flaw in most teenager’s diets, it is in the fruits and vegetable
department. Let’s increase that part of
the diet. It will improve
performances. It is also very important
to keep athletes properly hydrated.
Drink plenty of water! You can’t
drink enough. Bring a water bottle to
every practice as well.
b. We lift
weights! We are aiming towards maintenance
for most events. It will make athletes
stronger which will allow for less fatigue, more rapid recovery from injuries
and better performances.
c. We are a team from
top to bottom. We are only as strong as
our last person. We have no superstars
and no one will be treated as such. No
one is above our rules. No one is above
anyone else on the team. We will treat
each other with respect. We expect
everyone on our team to be approachable.
That means the upperclassmen and others who have been around and know
how things work are expected to help out the younger girls. Teach them how to properly warm-up and
prepare. It will benefit the team.
d. Injuries are a part
of sports. We know that and do not
expect an athlete to compete when they are injured. To go along with this, if an athlete,
especially at the beginning of the season, is unable to complete all workouts
due to injury or fatigue, they will not
be allowed to compete until they can be cleared by the trainer that they are
healthy. Remember, you will be sore
at the beginning but that will go away as you start to get into shape. Know the difference between the two. If you are unsure of whether you are injured
or just sore, talk to one of the coaches or use the school trainer. If you are injured, you need to see him and
let your event coach know. The dumbest
thing you can do is try to continue to compete through an injury. You are no good to the team at less than 100%
so use our trainer and get better. Until
you are healthy and our trainer clears you, your practice will be rehab with
him. ATHLETES ARE EXPECTED TO BE THERE AND WE WILL CHECK UP ON THAT!
6.
Leadership:
A
team can’t be successful without good leaders.
Leaders are positive role models, in school and out of school. Some are very quiet while others are very
vocal. Leaders have earned the respect
of their coaches and their teammates.
Good leaders aren’t always named “captain,” but good captains must be
good leaders.
If
you are a member of this team and would someday hope to be captain, here are
some “rules to live by.”
1.
Be
at practice every day.
2.
Listen
to your coach and work to your maximum ability every day.
3.
Remember,
you represent Coon Rapids
High School and your
teammates at all times. Be a positive
role model.
4.
Report
for the first day of practice mentally and physically “Ready to Go.” This means being in shape when we start.
5.
Leaders
should be extra supportive of other team members. Get to know teammates in other classes to
make yourself more approachable.
6.
Even
if you don’t qualify for state competition, if a teammate does, you help her
train the last week of the season.
7.
You
realize if you are elected captain, you must remain with the team during Spring
Break. No Vacations!
8.
Any
MSHSL rule violation will result in immediate loss of captaincy, whether the
violation occurs during the track season or in the off season.
9.
Remember,
the team doesn’t center around the captains.
The captains are there to serve the team.
